Polystyrene (especially the expanded "Styrofoam (R)" type) is a good insulator. Metals are good conductors of heat.

The insulating cup will maintain a greater heat differential than the conductor so if there is a liquid in the cup that is at a greater temperature than the surroundings, the metal cup will loose more heat than the polystyrene cup.

what type of cup keeps hot water hottest Paper or metal?

A metal cup will generally keep hot water hotter for longer compared to a paper cup. Metal is a better insulator than paper, so it helps to retain heat more effectively.

Which type of cup keeps cold water hottest plastic paper metal or glass?

No, paper will not keep water cold for the longest time. A metal cup will keep water the same temperature for the longest time. I know this because I did a science experiment about this but instead of cold water I used hot, which won't really make a difference. The next would be glass then paper.

Why are lifesaving rings made of Polystyrene?

Life rings are often made of polystyrene because it is lightweight, durable, and floats on water. This makes it easy to throw to someone in distress and provides buoyancy to keep them afloat until rescue. Additionally, polystyrene is resistant to water damage and can withstand exposure to the elements.

How does painting prevent rust?

Painting a material that rusts, usually an iron rich material like steel, keeps the metal from exposure to the environment such as air and humidity. Rust is actually the oxidation of metal, and protecting metal with paint does not allow this to happen.
