In 1891, Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope, or peep-hole viewer
The phonograph was invented in 1877, by Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison described the concept of simulating motion in 1888, and his associate William Dickson created a practical device by 1892.
Two disadvantages of the Edison kinetoscope were its limited viewing capacity, as it could only accommodate one viewer at a time, and its lack of sound, restricting the film experience to visual-only.
The kinetoscope was invented by Thomas Edison and his team as a way to create a device that could show short films individually to viewers. It was a precursor to modern motion picture technology and was one of the earliest forms of film projection for entertainment purposes.

Kinetoscope
the kinetoscope was the precursor to the modern motion-film projector. it created the illusion of a moving picture by rapidly passing a film "between a lens and an electric light bulb while the viewer peered through a peephole. Behind the peephole was a spinning wheel with a narrow slit that acted as a shutter, permitting a momentary view of each of the 46 frames passing in front of the shutter every second." check out: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/318211/Kinetoscope
