The first patent holder was John J. Loud in 1888. He was a leather tanner by trade. That patent expired. Loud was looking for something he could use on leather, but the pen proved too coarse to use on paper. Later, the Biro brothers Laszlo and Gyorgy, and a friend Jorge Meyne developed another pen which survived and was patented by them in 1943 in Argentina.
