Who invented the newton meter and when?

Chances are that the Newton Meter was invented around the time of Newton's

life/death. perhaps he invented it himself.

Sir Isaac newton created the newton metre 261 years ago because he wondered

how to measure the weight of water. Sir Isaac newton was a very clever and good

scientist.

-- The "Metre" ... the metric unit of length ... was not defined until at least

60 years after Newton's death.

-- The 'Newton' ... the metric unit of force ... was not developed until well into

the 19th Century, and was then named for the late, great English Physicist.

-- This question was first posted in early 2009, and the foregoing responses

some time after that. "261 years ago" from 2009 would have been the year

1748 ... 21 years after Newton's death.

-- Someone needing to measure the weight of water would not have needed the

'newton-metre'. It's a unit of energy, not of weight.

Aside from these minor and wholly negligible details, the original answers are fine work.
