You can't see your shadow in the dark because there is no shadow in the dark. Shadows are caused when something is blocking the light. And if there is no light that can be blocked, there can't be any shadows.
Darkness is, in itself, a shadow. You can't distinguish your shadow from the shadow cast by the box you're holding. They just blend together and are impossible to tell apart.

∙ 14y agoThe retina contains two different types of receptor cells which are called cones and rods. Cones are used to detect colour and rods are used to detect the brightness or dimness. The cone cells are more sensitive than rod cells in bright light. Because of this, it is more difficult to distinguish between colours in dim light.

∙ 12y agoColors are light reflected off of objects and received by the eye. Since there is no light, there's none to be reflected into the eye. Colors can be different colors of light received by the eye -- again since there's no light the eye sees no colors.
