White light is composed of a spectrum of colors with different wavelengths. When white light enters a medium like glass or water, each color refracts at a slightly different angle due to their different wavelengths. This separation of colors produces the spectrum of colors we see in a rainbow.
When white light passes through a triangular prism, it refracts, meaning, the light bends. When white light refracts, it disperses (separates) into the colours it is made up of - ie. the colours of the rainbow.

When it hits the glass the colours refract and disperse out as the spectrum of colours, which we see as a rainbow.

Rainbow is made from refraction & total internal reflection of light of the sun. The light of sun is white, which is combination of 7 colours. When rainbow occoures, white light is divide into all these colours. That's why rainbows have many colours.

You may use a glass prism and shine a white light through it. You will notice that there is rainbow of colours on the wall.
