Its easier to make lines on a slippery surface , like a mirror .
An image in a mirror is a reflection of the objects or people in front of it. The mirror reflects light rays that bounce off the objects, creating a reversed and virtual representation of the scene.
A ray that bounces off a mirror is called a reflected ray. When light hits a mirror, it reflects off at the same angle it approached the mirror, following the law of reflection.
If you shine a mirror at another mirror, the light will bounce off the first mirror, reflect off the second mirror, and then bounce back to the first mirror. This will create an infinite loop of reflections as the light continues to bounce back and forth between the mirrors.
When you look in a mirror, the light rays bounce off you, hit the mirror, and get reflected back to your eyes. This reflection creates a virtual image of yourself that appears to be behind the mirror.
When light hits a mirror, it usually bounces off it.

I could not find a definite answer for you regarding the handkerchief used to hold off the military dogs in WWII. But I happen to know a little about the story on them. The fishermen used the handkerchief to guard off the dogs that were used to find people hiding in boats. The dogs would smell something on the handkerchief and go to sniff finding his nose numb. The handkerchief had blood and cocaine on it. Blood to attract the dog. Cocaine to numb the dog's nose. If you want more information on this, at the end of the book, Number the Stars (by Lois Lowry) it tells more about. I have added some links for your further research.
The principle crop seems to be cocaine but coffee is also a big (and legal) crop
