generally speaking things appears the colors that they do because of two things, the way our eyes and brain perceive them and the way the object absorbs and reflects different wavelengths of the light spectrum. our minds interpret the light spectrum as the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo and violet and any combination of these colors. when light strikes an object, the object absorbs and reflects light waves, for instance if an object appears red to you, it's because the surface of the object absorbs all the other light wavelengths except red, which bounces back to our eye and causes the object to appear red. strangely enough, when all colors of the light spectrum are bounced back to us, we perceive the object to be white and when none of the colors are reflected, we perceive the object to be black!

The "green" ball usually appears green because it absorbs any other color of light that may

fall on it, but doesn't absorb green light, so any green light that falls on it bounces off of it,

and reaches your eye.

A red filter is red because it absorbs any other color of light that falls on it, and only the red light

passes through. So there's no green light coming out of the red filter, and no light that will bounce

off of a "green" object to reach your eye.

-- The reason it's called a "red object" is that it reflects only red, and absorbs light

of any other color incident upon it. So no matter what kind of light you illuminate

the object with, only red light, and no blue, will leave it.

-- The reason it's called a "blue glass" is that it transmits only blue light, and

absorbs light of any other color incident upon it. So no matter what kind of light

enters it, only blue, and no red, comes out the other side.

-- The object reflects only red into the glass, and nothing comes out the other side.

So the object appears black.

A green leaf absorbs red light and reflects green light. In a pure red light a green leaf won't reflect any light at all it will only absorb the red light and when no light is reflected back we see it as black.

Because a "blue" object reflects no light that isn't blue, whereas a red filter

doesn't pass any light that isn't red. So there's no light coming from the blue

object that's able to pass through the red filter. It appears as if there's no

light coming from it at all ... in other words, it appears black.

Blue object looks blue because it reflects blue light (shorter EM waves) and absorb all other waves. In red light you don't have shorter waves so they cant reflect to your eye.

Why a green object appears black when viewed through a red filter?

A green object appears black when viewed through a red filter (here a red filter means red light) because green object can only reflect green color and absorb all the other colors so in the red light it will definitely appear black.

Does a black object appear white when viewed through a red lens?

No. When you're looking at a black object with the naked eye, it obviously appears as black. If you looked at the same object with any colored lens, the object would appear as the same color (with semi tint of the color of the lens. Due to the fact that colored things are darker than clear things, objects seen in colored vision will appear darker than in clear vision, further proving that a dark colored object will not appear lighter when observed through a colored lens. Hope this helped

Black, or nearly so. The apple reflects only green light, the red filter only lets red light through, so nothing reaches the eye.

How do colored objects look under colored lights?

If the light is or contains the colour the object it is striking, then the object will appear to be the colour it originally is. If the light is not or does not contain the colour the object it is striking, then object will appear black. This is because an object will only reflect the light that is the same colour as it, all other light is absorbed. For example: Red, yellow, magenta, and white light will make a red object appear red as they all contain red light. Blue, green and cyan light will make a red object appear black.
