When sunlight hits water, the water breaks down into Oxygen, H+, and e- (electron). The electron gets "excited" in photosystems II and "jumps" until it finds the correct place to be in. The electron is losing energy as it jumps around. After photosystems II, the energy from the first electron is used in photosystems I (this is the process of photosynthesis). The process continues to the Calvin cycle (which i will not explain). The outcome of photosynthesis is sugar (usually glucose), and that glucose serves as "energy" for the plnts. That is how water gives energy to plants.
