Why is Einstein a hero?

Some people think that his discoveries were useless, and that he was just a phsycho with spiky, white hair. Basically he discovered random theories, like the law of relativity. When he died I read that he was planning on making a time machine. Anyway I'm not sure if that's true. But I guess he was super random. A few people said that it is an offence to call someone Einstein 'cos they thought he was stupid. I don't exactly think so, but I only know of a handful of things that he discovered.
