well its not exactly pear shaped but you can use the word prismatic... i.e., prism shaped...that shape is going to absorb light rays from outside and magnify whatever is there on the inside..In this case its the mercury..!! so the mercury inside the thermometer gets magnified and you can take the mercury reading easily...you can even observe this when you rotate the thermometer it looks different from every angle...so you take the readings where the mercury and the measurements on the glass are properly magnified..

(or you can avoid all this trouble and buy a digital thermometer...it will even beep and tell you when to take the thermometer out of your mouth !!)
