Actually, the x-ray was invented by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, and it was more of a discovery than anything. He realized that an image from his cathode ray generator projected further than possible. He then studied and did various tests to follow and created the first x-ray machine.
Neither Marie nor her husband Pierre Curie invented x-rays -- that work was done by William Roentgen. But the Curies were interested in Roentgen's work, as well as similar experiments done by a French scientist named Henri Becquerel, who discovered that a mineral called uranium also cast off rays. These rays were weaker than the X-rays found by Roentgen; Marie Curie became fascinated by Becquerel's work and decided to expand upon it. So she conducted her own experiments on uranium rays, and in 1897, she discovered what came to be called radioactivity (a word she invented).
In addition to her groundbreaking research on the structure of atoms, she and her husband Pierre also discovered two new radioactive elements, polonium and of radium. In 1903, she became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics. She won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. The committee said she earned the award "in recognition of her services to the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium, and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element."
