Prisms are used to see white light split into its component colors because white light is composed of different colors with varying wavelengths. Isaac Newton used a triangular prism to separate white light into its spectrum of colors. When white light passes through the prism, the different wavelengths of light are refracted by different angles, causing them to spread out and create the rainbow of colors.
