What to Expect

An X ray technician’s job can be rigorous as they deal with almost constant contact with patients who may be upset, anxious and often in pain. An x ray technician needs good communication skills to convey the necessary directions to the patients. A caring demeanor is helpful when working with patients who may be experiencing pain and anxiety. An x ray technician’s job is very physical, and they may be on their feet constantly and often have shift work when in a hospital setting.

Training to be an X Ray Tech

Radiology training can be accomplished in a vocational technology environment, hospital or school. The training program for an x ray technician must last a minimum of one year. Usually X ray technicians complete a minimum of an associate’s degree. Often they will complete a bachelor’s degree. Candidates for X ray Technician training should have a minimum of a GED test or possess a high school diploma.

Radiology training will includes classes in anatomy, physiology, radiation protection, radiation physics, imaging techniques and more. X ray technicians will also have coursework in medical ethics, terminology and patient care. Radiology students will also learn about the different x ray techniques, the possible reactions and complications a patient may encounter during imaging procedures (x ray, MRI’s, etc.) and how to address these problems.

Specializing in Your Field

Many radiology technicians will choose to become certified in their fields, and depending on their specialization, there are many options. To qualify for certification, the candidate must have graduated from an accredited program and pass the certification test. Certified and licensed X Ray Technicians are required to take 24 hours of continuing education (CEU’s) every two years to maintain their certification. The continuing education requirements assure that they maintain their professional knowledge and remain current in their field.
