Acorns are bad for dogs--they contain a substance that can make them sick, from just a bad tummy to intestinal blockage, and of course if they eat the shells, the sharp edges can't do the intestinal tract any good. As with a lot of things, he/she can knosh a couple without any ill effects, but my dog thinks God is dropping candy for him, and he is like a kid on Halloween, getting all he can. Muzzling helps, but we can't watch him every second. Yesterday, he had a few too many with their shells on and today he's pretty droopy. But he's had a couple a day probably for weeks since they started falling with no ill-effects.
The acid in dog stomachs would probably dissolve steel; you of course want to be careful of what she/he ingests; just use some common sense, but acorns are not the biggest danger to dogs. Just be mindful of it in the fall and keep the snacking to a minimum. Tell him to leave them for the squirrels who are at least smart enough to take the shell off.
