Peanuts will grow in the midwest. Peanuts require sandy soil that is free of lumps. If your soil does not fit the above description, add some sharp sand to your garden. The raw peanuts you plant must be unroasted. Plant peanuts around May 15th. If you have thick-shelled peanuts, remove shell and plant 1 inch deep and 10 inches apart. Space your rows 30 inches. Thin-shelled peanuts can be planted with shell intact and planted the same way as the thick-shelled. Clean cultivation is a must while peanuts are growing. Keep weeds out of the growing area. Try not to disturb the root zone of your peanuts when pulling weeds. After a hard freeze has killed the peanut plant, pull or dig up entire plant, roots and all, and separate the new peanuts from the roots. Let dry on newspaper in garage or basement. When dry, roast, shell and enjoy!
