It does not really matter when but spring is good for healing purposes. pick several branches that have interesting shape and decent foliage on the end, keep it balanced by gradually working your way up the tree from the bottom randomly selecting branches from different sides. trim all branches that dont fit your bonsai vision of what your tree should look like and remove most of the foliage from those remaining branches saving random ones on the way to the end and leaving just tufts on the ends. Step back often to be sure the tree has a balanced look to it, not too stark but not too busy. Have an idea or vision of what you want it to look like before you start, a perfect way would be to use a pane of glass and looking through it sketch with grease pens a possible design using the trees own branches as if you were tracing on top of it. Leave the glass there so you can refer to it as you progress. I have done this with olive trees ( the best ), cedars, and junipers and it is always a hit, It can give an old plant new life and a new look in your landscape. Put a little Japanese garden lamp near it for effect.
