Although they both belong to the same family there is a difference in the leaves or needles. Cedars bear their short needles in rosettes along the branches and pines usually have much longer needle grown in clumps toward the end of the twigs. There are many species of pines but only 4 types of cedar.
White Pine, Yellow Pine, Douglas Fir, Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar.
Deal is a softwood. White deal is from Picea Abies the Norway Spruce. Yellow or red deal is usually from Pinus sylvestris the Scots pine.

There are several varieties, such as longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, loblolly pine, and slash pine.See link below.

A yellow pine is one of various species of pine tree, or a specific New Zealand-based species, Latin name Halocarpus biformis.
Pine trees are very fragrant and have sweet sap. This is the reason you will find bees such as yellow jacket wasps attracted to pine trees.
