Burning, cutting and spraying are ways to control parthenium weed.
Specifically, the approach depends upon how much of an area must be treated and how old the plant in question is. A controlled burn is devastating to above- and below-ground plant parts. Three cuttings may be required in one year, with a late spring or early summer mowing being followed by a late summer herbicide treatment. Although controls with the active ingredients glyphosate or triclopyr tend to be particularly effective, the herbicide to be used will depend upon the type of land which is being invaded by parthenium weed. For example, glyphosate will serve as an efficacious control in fields and fallow lands whereas 2,4-D and dicamba respectively work best in non-agricultural lands and grassy pastures.
The above-mentioned three-pronged approach may result in control within 2-3 years.
