im not sure if you mean to keep it alive, as a houseplant. i don't know how to keep it alive outdoors or to grow it from the beginning, but if you take care of it properly inside it can grow pretty quickly and noticeably.
it needs to be in a sunny location, it will be perfectly fine on a windowsill. like any plant, you don't want it near a vent because the change in temperature would be bad for it. you want to keep water on the roots at all times. the roots do not always need to be entirely submerged, though they can be. if it looks yellowish, it most likely needs a larger container because the roots do take up a lot of space.
just don't keep the water level too high, keep it as high as you can without being higher than the roots as it could cause mold/decaying of the plant.
that's about it, I've kept mine for over a year and i keep needing larger containers. no special food is necessary.
