Tree plantation can be entirely of broadwood varieties, or coniferous, or a mixture of the two. Some plantations may have been originally planted to provide shelter inland, particularly from strong winds coming off the coast. Or planted as a commercial crop for softwood or hardwood timber, with seasonal felling and replanting. Landowners may even have planted woodland trees to improve the look of their property. Then there are the naturally sown plantations growing in the wild, ranging up to the tree line in mountainous areas.
