There is no such thing as the "nut" family. True nuts come from two different families of trees, neither of which sunflowers belong to. Other plants that produce fruits called nuts belong to a wide variety of families.

This depends to what "nut allergy" refers. A tree nut allergy would include "true" nuts, including sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, etc. A peanut allergy is actually to a legume, so eating sunflower seeds would be safe as long as they were not processed in a plant that also processes peanuts or peanut-containing products.
