I have had a similar experience with a 3 ft lilac bush. It is (still alive and coming back!)
Rather than a lawnmower trim, it was pruned to about 6 inch height after a large
tree limb fell upon it and destroyed most of the branches. This occurred about two
years ago and now and is approx 2 ft in height. The new growth branches are spreading
naturally. (Zone 5 for your reference.)
