It's generally not considered a fodder crop since its primary use is as a human food staple, but it sometimes is used for fodder. The grain is sometimes fed to livestock, and in the southern parts of the US it is sometimes grazed early in the spring when farmers and ranchers are running low on stored hay. Once the crop is starting to joint, the stock are removed so the plant can continue its development for the grain crop to be harvested later.
