Begonias have worked well for me. The ones with darker leaves do well in full sun, and those with lighter green leaves must be in at least some shade. My full sun begonias even come back year after year if I cover them with some mulch before winter. I live in GA, zone 7b.
41 issues plus 2 annuals
I have bought flowers that are tagged as annuals due to the grow zone I'm in. However, I heavily mulch(about 2-3 inches of mulch/leaves) the plants and most of them have come back. They do take a bit longer to wake up in the spring. I am in zone 4b and have plants/flowers that normally grow in zone 6. Never say never! Hope that answers the question.
Central Daylight Time zone (The time zone used by Kansas in the summer)
Wisconsin is zone 4. Dahlias will not overwinter in zones lower than zone 8. But you can grow dahlias as annuals or bring the tuber inside for the winter.
Annuals are planted in the spring and will die off in the fall, or usually when the first hard frost hits. Perennials will become dormant in the fall/winter and "come back to life" next spring. Some plants can be considered as both depending on where you live. For example, a Hibiscus won't make it through an Up-State NY winter (in which case it would be an annual), but it will last year round in florida, or CA. Perennials are classified by Zone Hardiness. Lower the hardiness zone, the colder the weather the plant can handle. A geographical area that is inn Zone 3 means that the average winter temps go down to -20 deg F. Zone 10 means that the ave. winter temp. is around +30 deg F.
You have left out some rather important information, such as your growing zone and the site conditions (sunny? shady? containers?). In Chicago (zone 5) many annuals can be expected to bloom from seed in just a few months: zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, poppies, tithonia, calendula. If you want a head start, any of these can be started in paper cups on a sunny windowsill in March or April (kids love this).
Time zone: EST - Summer EDT
Go to Bellossom at the flower zone and it will give you a watering can.
Tropical :)
The climate of a temperate zone in summer is more similar to a polar zone than a tropical zone. This is because temperate zones experience moderate temperatures, unlike the consistently warm temperatures found in tropical zones. However, the summer season in temperate zones is still warmer than in polar zones.

Common milkweed flowers in June in zone 5. There are other types of milkweed that bloom later.Tropical milkweed flowers all summer. It blooms even after it has made seed pods. However tropical milkweed is an annual in most temperate growing zones.
