It has been said (and not completely dis-proven) that some plants (like peas) will tend to grow or "reach out" in a east-west direction and therefore should be planted in north-south rows to prevent them growing out in between rows. The best answer for you will depend upon the particular location of your garden and the crop you intend to grow. Rows should always be made against the grade, so that they don't wash downhill. Always consider the height of plants and the shade they will cast, so your planting method does not accidentally shade a portion of your garden. Perhaps the best way to determine if east-west or north-south rows will work better for your particular spot and crop is to choose one direction and give it a try. If you notice any of the problems mentioned above, make adjustments or change the direction next year.
