Silos are built so that chopped feed can ferment without being exposed to oxygen. Freshly cut silage is put in the silos from the bottom up, and taken from the bottom when it is fully fermented. The reason silage is put in from the bottom up is that the pressure from putting in more feed from the bottom squishes out any existing air pockets containing oxygen, which could potentially spoil the feed. The silage is left in the silos for three weeks to several months before being fed to livestock.
