Elephants have large ears so that they can flap away annoying bugs and flies. But because the capillaries (blood vessels) just under the skin in their ears helps to control their body temperature, many animal biologists believe that that is the primary cause for such large ears. We are jsut beginning to understand animal languages. Elephants communicate over very long distances using subsonic sounds (sounds that we, as humans, cannot hear). So it is quite possible that the shape of their ears helps to funnel these sounds, just as a bloodhound's ears help to funnel scents to their noses.
