Tonka bean is an English equivalent of the French 'Coumarou'. That's the common name for the tree. Its scientific name is Dipteryx odorata. The French common name and the adjective 'odorata' in the Latin name refer to the distinctively sweet, freshly mown hay smell of its natural toxin, coumarin. This toxin has the allelopathic effect of slowing the growth of nearby competitive vegetation in general, and of grasses and herbs in particular.
