A rug is a piece of the carpet, while the carpet covers the whole floor!

Rug is small while the carpet is long size.

Carpet is used for wall and floor treatment, while the rugs are used for floors.

Both are made up of same material - nylon, wool, polypropylene...

Rugs are expensive as compare to the carpet.
