The national flower of France is an iris that inspired the Fleur-de-lis three part symbol of this European nation. The form is derived from the native iris of French waterways where it grows in large colonies in shallow shorelines.

It first became famous during a battle by King Clovis of the Franks in 496 A.D. when these yellow flowered iris showed him a shallow place in the river where he could Ford with his men to vanquish the enemies.

Later in 1147 King Louis VII saw a blue form of the flower in a dream and officially adopted it as the national symbol stylized into the fleur-de-lis.
