People don't normally talk about plants as being in phyla. It's more common to hear plant divisions. Palms are in the division Magnoliophyta, the flowering plants. More specifically, they are in a clade known as the Commelinids, which a large group of monocots. They are in the order Aracales, and the family Arecaceae, also known as the palm family. All palms species fall into one of the many genera in the Arecaceae.
