At the time of of the discovery of Brazil, when landed in it, the portuguese sailors found a beautiful and imponent tree, whose wood was reddish and they nicknamed this tree "pau-brasil" which means "brasil wood". The name Brasil comes from the portuguese name "brasa" which means "hot coal, ember" on english, due to its red-coloured wood.
From one tree called "Pau-Brasil". So as Brazil had a lot of them, the portuguese colonizers gave this name.
