Dogwoods are best pollinated when there is a stand of trees close together. The flowers vary in size and so the pollinators need to know where to find the bracts. What also helps is when the flowers are triggered to open, they open quickly, spreading pollen at a high velocity. Large flies, beetles and honey bees are large enough to trigger the action.
