Carnation leaves and stems are toxic to pets and livestock. Most caterpillars stay clear, but there are some critters that can eat upon the plant.

The following pest bother carnations:

  • Aphids - suck sap, feeds on buds, leaves & terminal shoots, transmits mottle virus
  • Carnation tortrix moth - injurs growing shoots, flower buds & leaves
  • Carnation fly, Hylemya briennescens - Maggot bore into tissue & kill plant
  • Carnation Bud Mite - cause bud rot
  • Spider Mites- tissues wither and die & growth is stunted
  • Thrips - cause damage to flower, plant get speckled and stunted
  • Cutworms - cut seedlings off at the soil line
  • Many fungal infections can cause tissue damage.
  • There are some bacterial invasions that cause the plants problems
  • Nematodes attack the roots of the plant
  • larvae of the moth Peridroma saucia eats flower buds
