All other things being equal, the hillside with fewer plants will erode more quickly.

There are a number of reasons for this:

  • The presence of vegetation acts to intercept rainfall which acts to reduce the rate rainwater reaches the soil. This in turn reduces the chances of scour occurring where soil is washed away.
  • Plant roots act to bind the soil together (technically the act to inhibit the formation of shear planes and increase it's shear strength) and again reduce the potential for erosion.
There are likely to be many more!

What is the control variable in the experiment does adding fertilizer to plants allow them to grow faster?

Can plants germinate without sunlight?

Yes. Tried this experiment and the plants in the dark germinate and grew faster than the plants in the sunlight. But, if you leave it in the dark for too long, its leaves would turn yellow from the lack of chlorophyll and the plants would eventually die. (I tried with green bean plants, so not sure if other plants can) By the way, you will have to make sure that the plants in the dark have enough air and water, if not it will probably die before germinating.
