Early March
Today
Dogwoods typically bloom around April 15th.
I'm pretty sure in the spring only. Like starting in March, depending where in the south it is.
In Savannah, the azaleas are in bud by the 26th of March, and should be in full bloom by the 30th. With the dogwoods blooming above them, it is a beautiful sight. They will be gone before April is done.
Some flowers that bloom in May in the US include tulips, daffodils, lilacs, sages, pansies, star hasmines, mock oranges, dogwoods, and speedwalls. Granted, certain species of May flowers are found only in certain states. Roses may begin to bloom in May, but they more commonly bloom in June.
A dogwood tree can bloom during their second year. Some dogwoods take between five and seven years to bloom fully. The trees need time to become established before they will bloom every year.

One way to identify a dogwood tree when it is not in bloom is by looking at its overall shape and form. Dogwoods typically have a rounded or vase-shaped canopy with distinctive branching patterns. Additionally, the bark of a dogwood tree is smooth and grayish-brown, often with unique ridges and furrows.

In the spring, starting about the 26th of March and running well into April, visitors come to Charleston, SC to see the azaleas in bloom. It is truely a beautiful sight. Many of the irises and daylilies are still in bloom and the dogwoods and wisteria are heavy with blooms, but none as beautiful as the azaleas. Although do be warned, that is the optimal time for the biting sand gnat, known to many visitors as the ungodly no-see-um.
