Planting trees is good for environmental health. Trees play a major part in sustaining life on Earth. They help filter the air by removing harmful chemicals. They exchange carbon dioxide with oxygen (just like how animals do the opposite). Trees provide shelter, shade, food, and provide humans with medicine (of course this depends on what part of what species of tree), and raw building materials.

Trees help regulate the environment. Besides the gas exchange, they also control the local humidity by passing water through their leaves and trunk (why do you think it always rains in the rain forest?). Their roots help keep moisture in the ground and the soil itself in place: otherwise it would dry up and blow away (think Dust bowl) or wash away (erosion). Trees block the wind, which is why forested mountains last longer than bare rock: there is no wind to chisel, or sand-blast, it away.

Also, most people find trees to be esthetically pleasing.
