ജി. ശങ്കരക്കുറുപ്പ് മലയാളത്തിലെ പ്രശസ്തനായ കവിയും ഉപന്യാസകാരനും സർവ്വകലാശാല അദ്ധ്യാ‍പകനുമായിരുന്നു ജി. ശങ്കരക്കുറുപ്പ്. 1901 ജൂൺ 3 ന്‌, ശങ്കരവാര്യരുടേയും ലക്ഷ്മിക്കുട്ടിയമ്മയുടേയും മകനായി കാലടിക്ക് അടുത്തുള്ള നായത്തോട് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചു. വയസ്സ് 17 ആയപ്പോൾ ഹെഡ് മാസ്റ്ററായി ജോലിയിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. 1937ൽ എറണാകുളം മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകനായി ജോലിയിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു. 1956ൽ അദ്ധ്യാപകജോലിയിൽ നിന്നും വിരമിച്ചു. കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി പ്രസിഡന്റ്, കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാഡമി അംഗം,രാജ്യസഭാംഗം എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ സേവനം അനുഷ്ടിച്ചു. 1978 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2ന്‌ അന്തരിച്ചു

പുരസ്കാരങ്ങൾ1961ൽ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാഡമി അവാർഡ്, 1963ൽ കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാഡമി അവാർഡ് എന്നിവ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശ്വദർശനം എന്ന കൃതിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു. ആദ്യത്തെ ജ്ഞാനപീഠം ജേതാവായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. 1965-ൽ ഓടക്കുഴൽ എന്ന കൃതിക്കാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ജ്ഞാനപീഠം ലഭിച്ചത്. കൂടാതെ പദ്മഭൂഷൺ ബഹുമതിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‌ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് വിമർശനംവളരെയധികം നിരൂപക ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയിട്ടുള്ള കവിതകളാണ് ജിയുടേത്. സുകുമാർ അഴീക്കോട് രചിച്ച "ശങ്കര കുറുപ്പ് വിമർശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു" എന്ന ഖണ്ഡന നിരൂപണം നിരവധി അനുകൂല-പ്രതികൂല സംവാദങ്ങൾക്ക് കാരണമായി.
