YOu have many choices. You could use the word literally, as in "The dark cloud passed overhead and cast a shadow on my face." You could write a figurative description, such as "A cloud of sadness hung over the group after they learned of Bill's death." You could even write a metaphor, like "Depression is a black cloud covering the sun of happiness."
