Hrothgar is the King of the Danes that is helped by Beowulf, But he is descended from Scyld Sceafing. The term Danes come from the term Scyldings or Scyld danes. So the first Ruler of the Danes was Scyld Sceafing. The second was his son Beowulf the Dane.

The story takes place in the land of the Danes and the land of the Geats. The land of the Danes is modern day Denmark and the land of the Geats is modern day southern Sweden. In the 5th and 6th century those areas would be part of Scandinavia.
Grendel is surprised by Beowulf's strength and fearlessness in their first encounter. He expects an easy victory as he has been terrorizing the Danes unopposed, but Beowulf proves to be a formidable opponent.
Beowulf introduces himself to Hrothgar and explains that he has come to offer his assistance in defeating the monster Grendel that has been terrorizing the Danes. Beowulf also mentions his father's relationship with Hrothgar in the past, highlighting their familial connection.

A watchman questions Beowulf to make sure he isn't an invader.
I believe, the first to meet him, is the guard or sentry guy who guards the shore. 12 years after Grendel first attacked Herot.
It was pretty successful. Grendel broke into Heorot at night and killed thirty danes. He drank their blood and brought their head shome as trophies. Not bad for a monster's night out!
