If a description of the cave is not given then the author has left it to your imagination.
cause he is a clown
Grendel is compared to Cain in the beginning of the epic because like Cain, Grendel is an outcast marked by God for his crime. The comparison underscores Grendel's alienation and his cursed existence, much like Cain's after he slew his brother Abel.
Grendel is being punished by God because he is a descendant of Cain. Grendel is punished by being outcast from the society of the Heorot much like Cain was outcast from Eden. Grendel is fatherless as well which makes him a bastard.
If I recall correctly, it wasn't called anything, it was a collection of Jamie's mothers' favorite quotes. Almost like a journal.
a kenning for Grendel's mother
After the fight between Grendel and Beowulf the monster's arm is left. Beowulf had ripped off Grendel's arm and it is hung up like a trophy.
He treats her like a child, moving her out of the mouth of the cave when she tries to block his way by picking her up under her armpits like a child. He loves her only because she is his mother. He says, "[M]y mother's fat, foul bulk rolling over..."(9).
The novel Grendel actually makes Humans seem like the bad guys. Going from Beowulf, where Grendel was hated beyond comprehension and for what seemed like good reason has been explained and even turned upside down by John Gardner and to that I say bravo!
it depends what kind you want I like the grendel
Yes people like their mothers because, mothers cared for them when they young. Mothers protected them, listen to them and provided for their well being.
The poet/author wanted to tell 2 sides of the story. If you read the book, "Grendel" you will understand why he was made into what he is. Since Grendel is a descendant of Cain, the moment he was born, he was in the eyes of other just as evil as Cain. But his mom wanted to protect him from the ugly world outside. Grendel was made like this by those humans who pushed him. So that can show no one was born evil and can refer to situations in today's world.
Most mothers like a tidy house.
