Technology has been developed to allow people to self publish their own material therefore cutting out the middle man such as publishers and agents. There is a great website called Smashwords that allows people to write and publish their own writings on their website. They list all the tools necessary for a person to write, compose and upload their writing material. You can also list your book as an EBook for free or set an amount you would like people to pay to download your material.
There are quite a few websites that will let one publish their advertisements for free. To name a few, one could try Friday Ad, Publish Free Ads and Free Ads.

There are many ways to share a pattern of your own design. You can start a blog and post it there. If you are on Facebook you can write a "note" and publish it there. If you are on a forum, some allow you to publish it in their pattern section. I am not familiar with knitting forums, but Crochetville allows this. Craftown publishes patterns from many designers on their web site at craftown. That would be pretty simple as all you have to do is provide the pattern. They do the rest. I would have the pattern checked for accuracy, include instructions for any special stitches or abbreviations used. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- you can also join ravelry and publish it there. There are also people who will 'test' your pattern for you before you do publish which is a great thing.
There aren't a lot of publishers who publish online, especially for free. You can submit your novel to a regular publisher and see if you can SELL it -- that way you get paid. You can always get a blog and publish it online -- that's free. Someplace like LiveJournal will have free memberships where you can post your writing.
