When one is 'in limbo' s/he is unable to complete a task. The person is kept waiting without information sufficient to carry on or return. For example, when you make a telephone call and are 'put on hold' you cannot complete your task or even speak to someone to find out why or what is happening. Originally it referred only to a person in 'the afterlife' not having to go to Hell, but having died 'in original sin' and thus having to endure this mild punishment. The word comes from the Latin limbus meaning 'edge'.
