Poppy red is a "known/recognized" red.
It is neither scarlet, which is too bright, nor crimson, which is too dark.
If I had to pick another known color close to poppy red, I would suggest vermilion, but some how I don't think that would work in a poem.
The best compromise would be scarlet, but many people will find that inaccurate.
The colour/color of poppy species include red, blue, white, orange, pink, purple and yellow. The colour of poppy traditionally used for Remembrance Day is red.

Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) in Commonwealth countries is November 11. In New Zealand, France, Belgium, Serbia, and the US, it is called Veterans Day. Remembrance Sunday is the nearest Sunday to Poppy Day.
Typical poppy etiquette is to remove your poppy after November 11th. The reason being, for those who attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony, the tradition is to lay your poppy on the cenotaph after the ceremony. If you continue to wear your poppy after November 11th, it shows that you did not attend a ceremony or lay your poppy in respect, thus can be seen as a sign of disrespect.
Canada, for one, celebrates Remembrance Day.
you wear it on your chest to signify that you remember those people that fought and died on the battlefield
The black bit of a remembrance poppy symbolizes the sacrifice made by soldiers who died in battle. It represents the grief and mourning for the lives lost during war. The poppy itself, with its bright red petals, serves as a reminder of the bloodshed, while the black center emphasizes the somber nature of remembrance. This symbolism is particularly significant during events like Remembrance Day, honoring those who served and sacrificed for their country.
