The "Matter of Britain" included the important literature about King Arthur. The great metrical romances, tales in verse, represent this literature. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, from the fourteenth century is the finest example. The "Matter of Britain" is also represented by the great prose work of Thomas Malory in the fifteenth century, Le Morte d'Arthur.
