"Slam", by Walter Myers is a wonderful book for young people. I am a middle school teacher and it appears on the eighth grade reading list as an appropriate book. For parents who are concerned about the 'outside world' in your children's reading, be prepared. There are hints of kissing and making out in cars, and there is a very prevalent plot about a young man who is ruining his life if he succumbs to continuing selling crack on the streets. There is also the entrance of a woman in the story who the boys meet - who is a crack head. The main plot of the story is a responsible look at a young man who leaves his current school and attends an academic magnet school to play Basketball and learns he needs help in math.

This is a common story and very interesting to me because it reminded me of the early days of my youth where, 20 young African American students left our high school to attend an all-white school. The difference is some length of time has passed and in the story, you don't see the reflections of much racism and hatred.

It's a good book and I think important to help all cultures see inside the lives of African Americans. Not all of these details are reflected in all black life - but many of us can relate.
