Besides the obvious (one is set to music), one difference I can think of is that songs usually repeat a refrain more often than poems do. So, there is less repetition in poetry in general. Another difference is that some song lyrics aren't poetic at all. Singing things like "oooh" and "yeah yeah yeah" sometimes sound good, but in poetry, those types of things are rarely there. And, especially in certain types of music, the lyrics wouldn't make a decent poem at all. The screaming and the grunting don't translate well in print. Not that you *couldn't* have that in a poem... just that it would be really bad poetry.

Well, in most cases an artist is the person who is actually performing the song. The songwriter writes the song. In most cases though (depending on the music you listen to) the artist writes the song.
