The Odyssey is the sequel to the Iliad which tells the story of the Trojan War that lasted for ten years. Odysseus, King of Ithaca, is not the main character in the Iliad, but with help from the god Poseidon he wins the war using the Trojan Horse scheme. The rest of the Greeks sail home, but for another ten years Odysseus is prevented from returning to his home because he has insulted Poseidon by taking all the credit for winning the Trojan War. Because he has earned the wrath of Poseidon, Odysseus encounters monsters and women with magical powers who continually thwart his efforts to go home. The Odyssey also tells the story of Odysseus' wife Penelope and their son Telemechus, and the trials they must endure while waiting for Odysseus to return.
