I suppose it teaches a different lesson to everyone, but many interpreted it as a lesson of self determination. Bella thought she couldn't live without Edward but she made do with Jacob and although she still was devastated that Edward was gone, she did the best she could with the tools she was given to rebuild her life. Maybe another one would be not to depend on one person so entirely.
